Michigan taxpayers with past-due tax debts should be aware of a new scam making the rounds through the U.S. Postal Service, according to the Michigan Department of Treasury.

In the scheme, taxpayers are sent what appears to be a government-looking letter about an overdue tax bill, asking the taxpayer to immediately contact a toll-free number to resolve a tax debt or face asset seizure. The piece of correspondence appears credible to the taxpayer because it uses specific personal facts about the outstanding tax debt pulled directly from publicly available information.

The scammer’s letter attempts to lure the taxpayer into a situation where they could make a payment to a criminal.

“All taxpayers need to be aware of this scam,” said Deputy State Treasurer Ann Good, who oversees Treasury’s Financial and Administrative Services programs. “If you have questions about an outstanding state debt, please don’t hesitate to contact us. The state Treasury Department’s correspondence involves official letters sent through the U.S. Postal Service, including several options to resolve your debt and information outlining your taxpayer rights.”

Taxpayers who receive a letter from a scammer or have questions about their state debts should call Treasury’s Collections Service Center at 1-866-218-7224. A customer service representative can log the scam, verify outstanding state debts and provide flexible payment options.

Parks and Recreation Master Plan update

Information Regarding Requirements for Updating Parks and Recreation Master Plans -

Thirty Day Public Comment Period -
The required thirty day public comment period is now open for the draft Milford Township Recreation Master Plan 2019-2023.  A hard copy of the draft plan is available at the Milford Township offices and via following this link:  Click Here For Master Plan

 Please tell us what you think of the recommendations found within the draft plan, either in writing or at the Public Hearing to be held by the Parks and Recreation Commission on Monday January 14, 2019. 

 General Information Regarding Updating Parks and Recreation Master Plans -

Milford Township is in the process of updating its Recreation Master Plan.  Per the requirements of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (M-DNR) -- a major recreational grant originator in Michigan -- community recreation plans are only valid for five year periods; after which time, they must be updated to address possible changes within the community. 

 Milford Township’s most recent recreation plan expired in 2017, and because of this, the Township is not currently able to apply to the State of Michigan for any grants to support recreational services within the Township. 

In October 2018, the Milford Township Board of Trustees hired a consultant, Wade Trim, to assist in updating its recreation plan, prior to the February 1, 2019 M-DNR deadline. 

As a part of the update process, the M-DNR requires a minimum of three opportunities for public engagement in the planning process:

1)      Public Engagement during Plan Development – the MDNR encourages significant public engagement occur during the drafting of the recreation plan.  The Milford Township Parks and Recreation Commission hosted a public hearing on February 12, 2018 and a public workshop on Monday November 19, 2018.

2)      30 Day Public Review Period – the draft plan must be available for a minimum of 30 days for public review and comment.  The comment period is open from Wednesday December 12, 2018 through Friday January 11, 2019.  

3)      Public Hearing – prior to plan adoption by the local elected body, a public hearing must be held so that local comments about the plan may be given.  The required Public Hearing is scheduled for Monday January 14, 2019 in front of the Parks and Recreation Commission meeting at 7 PM in the Police Department Conference Room at Milford Civic Complex. 


At the January 14, 2019 Parks and Recreation Commission meeting, the commission will be asked to recommend the draft plan to the Township Board of Trustees for consideration.  The Milford Township Board of Trustees is expected to take up this recommendation at its January 16, 2019 meeting.  If the Board adopts the plan, it will be submitted to the M-DNR prior to the February 1, 2019 deadline. 


If approved by the M-DNR, the Charter Township of Milford, Recreation Master Plan 2019-2023 will be current through December 31, 2023.

Open Burning Permits

Burn permits are now obtained from Milford Township Offices during normal business hours.  After being issued a permit number, then call Police Department at 248-684-1815.  See attached Burn Permit Ordinance


On August 4, 2018, the State of Michigan Department of Health and Human Services issued a "do not eat" advisory for fish in the Huron River due to the detection of a class of substances known as PFAS (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances). This advisory was updated on August 24, 2018 and again on August 31, 2018. A subsequent advisory was issued on September 18, 2018 regarding PFAS related foam in the Huron River.
