PARKS & RECREATION MASTER PLAN REVIEW

The Commissioners discussed at length several ways to review the plan.  After discussion it was determined to review the next two sections at the next meeting.

The Commissioners briefly discussed the Joint Master Plan Kickoff meeting that was held on June 12, 2006 and the process involved in creating a joint master plan with Milford Village.  Commissioner Mazzara noted that the Village has a copy of the Township’s Parks & Recreation Master Plan, which will be considered in the process.  After discussion it was determined to appoint

Commissioner Mazzara to attend the meetings to represent the Commission in regards to the joint plan with Commissioner Parks as an alternate.

FRIENDS OF MILFORD SKATE PARK (FoMSP) UPDATE

It was noted that all the ramps in possession of the FoMSP were recently stolen and a skate day is scheduled for Saturday, June 24, 2006, which is now in jeopardy of taking place.

Commissioner Mazzara stated that meetings have taken place between Township, Village, YMCA and FoMSP representatives for a possible site at Hubbell Pond Park.  A specific location at that site has yet to be determined for a possible skate park location.

VILLAGE PARKS & RECREATION UPDATE

Mr. Bill Serchak, Village Parks & Recreation Liaision, was not present to present an update.  Commissioner Parks, the Township’s Liaision to the Village Parks & Recreation Commission noted that they have selected the second Saturday in October (October 14, 2006) to hold the joint fall picnic and that they already have plans in the making.

Commissioner Mazzara expressed concern that both commissions should organize a joint picnic equally and plans should be decided upon jointly and that they apparently were not.  He suggested that a meeting be set in which both commission’s representatives could attend to plan the picnic’s theme, agenda, activities and provide an estimate of cost.  Secretary Terian stated that he would coordinate setting up a meeting date with Village Parks & Recreation representatives.

WEBSITE DISCUSSION

Chairman Arrowsmith suggested viewing other websites in order to provide the Township with ideas for enhancing the Parks & Recreation portion of their website and offered that White Lake Township, Howell (City) and Oakland Township’s websites had good information.  He also provided printouts of those website’s content for the Commission.  The Commissioners discussed various website enhancement styles, which included mission statement, meeting dates, minutes, contact person, activities, links, volunteer opportunities and trail maps.  After discussion, the Commissioners determined the Township must first redesign and upgrade their website, but they would provide some specific ideas for their portion.

NEW BUSINESS

NEW FIRE STATION LOCATION

The Commissioners discussed the possible location of a fire station at Martindale and General Motors Roads, which would work well with the Milford to Kensington Trail location in regards to locating a traffic light at that intersection.  Commissioner Wolfe noted the Huron Clinton Metropolitan Authority (HCMA) did not foresee a traffic light placed there if a fire station was not located there.  Chairman Arrowsmith asked Commissioner Mazzara, Township Board Liaison, to convey to the Township Board that the Commission would have concerns if a new fire station was not located at the Martindale and General Motors Roads intersection.

The Commissioners briefly discussed the need for a safe crossing of General Motors Road for trail users.

COMMISSIONER’S COMMENTS

Secretary Terian commented that he enjoyed reading the Master Plan.

Commissioner Nasholm asked if there was any interest in having Parks & Recreation patches.  Secretary Terian commented that ordering 50 patches would cost about $10.00 per patch.

Commissioner Mazzara noted that he would be attending the required training on the Adopt-A-Road program this Thursday.  The Commissioners discussed getting volunteers for their first cleanup via the volunteer email list.  Commissioner Mazzara stated that he would be absent from next month’s meeting.

Commissioner Wolfe commented that the pond at Indian Springs Metropark’s Environmental and Discovery Center would be filled.
