Chairman Drury called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.

 

It was determined that a quorum was present.

 

APPROVAL OF MINUTES, SEPTEMBER 20, 2005

Commissioner Terian moved, Commissioner Mazzara seconded to approve the minutes of September 20, 2005 as presented.  Vote unanimously carried.

 

CORRESPONDENCE

There was no correspondence to address.

 

CALL TO THE PUBLIC

There was no public present.

 

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

MILFORD RECREATIONAL TRAIL

There was no updated grant information.

 

Chairman Drury noted that the Township Board did not approve the request to name the trail after Paul Baker because Huron Clinton Metropark Authority (HCMA) officials were not in favor of naming the trail after an individual.

 

FRIENDS OF MILFORD SKATE PARK (FoMSP) UPDATE

Chairman Drury stated the open skate event, held in Central Park on Saturday, September 24, 2005, was a success, with over 100 youth in attendance.  The group raised approximately $1,300.00 - $1,500.00.

 

Chairman Drury reported the following:

The next open skate will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2005 in Central Park.

A spaghetti dinner fundraiser will be held on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 at the American Legion Hall.

Sparkies Grill in Highland will hold a fundraiser on December 12, 2005, by donating 10% of that day’s sales.

The next meeting of the FoMSP will be Monday, October 24, 2005 at South Hill Church.

The federal tax exempt status is close to being approved, possibly in November.

 

TOWNSHIP PARKS & RECREATION LOGO COMMITTEE

Commissioners Mazzara and Parks reported that the banner was used for the recent Parks & Recreation Commissions’ Joint Picnic.

 

Chairman Drury noted that the Township Board has approved the artwork set-up expense for the logo for clothing.  He presented an order form and asked that order forms be completed and turned in to him by December 1, 2005, so one order can be made.  He said that purchases would not be paid for by the Township. The Commissioners discussed what type and color of wearables to purchase and decided on golf shirts or hoodie sweatshirts in royal blue with white stitching.

 

FUTURE TOWNSHIP PARKS

Commissioner Terian reported that the Land Acquisition Criteria Committee (LACC) would soon be submitting their recommendation to Supervisor Green. He explained that the criteria involved a ten-category rating system for donated property to help determine its value.

 

ADOPT-A-ROAD

Commissioner Mazzara stated that he has not attended the mandatory class yet.  He expects the first clean-up to take place in the spring.

 

COMMUNITY PICNIC REPORT

Commissioner Parks reported that the event well very well, considering that it was the first one.  The community turnout was good, with about 500 in attendance.  He felt several changes could be made for next year’s event.

 

Commissioner Mazzara commented that he would like to hold a spring and fall picnic and possibly focus one on older youth and one on younger kids.  He noted that he would send a letter to the editor of The Milford Times thanking businesses and volunteers for their support.

 

The Commissioners discussed partnering with the Village Parks & Recreation Commission and/or the Downtown Development Authority to purchase a movie screen to be used at future events.

2006 PARKS & RECREATION BUDGET UPDATE

Commissioner Mazzara reported that the 2006 Budget would be approved at the November 16, 2005 Township Board Meeting.  The designated amount for Parks & Recreation would be $10,000.

 

COMMUNITY CONTACTS/ORGANIZATIONS LIST

Chairman Drury said he would discuss this with Supervisor Green.

 

VILLAGE PARKS & RECREATION UPDATE

Commissioner Parks stated there was nothing to report.

 

COMMISSION VACANCY

Mrs. Brandt stated that an article announcing the vacancy appeared in the previous week’s edition of The Milford Times.

 

NEW BUSINESS

Commissioner Terian announced that a new equine club, the Kensington Trail Riders Association, has been formed and has the support of Kensington Metropark officials.

 

After discussion the Commissioners decided to participate in the annual Christmas Parade, held this year on Saturday, November 26th (Thanksgiving Weekend).  They also decided to invite the Village Parks & Recreation Commission and the FoMSP to take part.

 

COMMISSIONER’S COMMENTS

Chairman Drury suggested getting a schedule of key dates for the trail grants.

 

NEXT MEETING

The Commissioners discussed canceling a meeting during the upcoming holiday season and decided to cancel the meetings of Monday, November 21, 2005 and Monday, December 19, 2005 and set a meeting for Monday, December 5, 2005 instead.  The meeting would be held in the Milford Police Conference Room.

 

ADJOURNMENT

Chairman Drury adjourned the meeting 7:57 p.m.
