Chairman Drury called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.

 

It was determined that a quorum was present.

 

APPROVAL OF MINUTES, AUGUST 15, 2005

Commissioner Nasholm moved, Commissioner Parks seconded to approve the minutes of August 15, 2005 as presented.  Vote unanimously carried.

 

CORRESPONDENCE

Chairman Drury stated the following correspondence was received:

-         Information from Michigan Skate Parks, LLC, with locations in Oakland  County and Indiana.

-         A letter, dated May 2, 2005, from a Highland Township resident seeking support for a teen center in Highland.

-         Greenways Initiative, Green Forum IV, to be held on October 5, 2005 at the Detroit Science Center.

-         Email from Oakland County Fiscal Services regarding a list of grant opportunities offered by Federal, State and various Foundations.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

MILFORD RECREATIONAL TRAIL

An Easement Agreement would be submitted with the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund (MNRTF) Grant Application, which grants an easement from the Huron Clinton Metropolitan Authority (HCMA) to the Township for the purpose of trail construction, use, operation maintenance and repair.

The Township Board at their meeting of August 17, 2005 postponed the naming of the Milford Recreational Trail in order to verify that the HCMA and Milford Village were in agreement with naming the trail the Paul Baker Trail.

 

SKATE PARK

The Commissioners discussed the open skate event to be held in Central Park in Milford on September 24, 2005 by the Friends of Milford Skate Park (FoMSP).  It was confirmed that the Township couldn’t sponsor the event for insurance coverage reasons because the FoMSP does not yet hold their 501c3 federal tax exemption status.

 

TOWNSHIP PARKS & RECREATION LOGO COMMITTEE

It was reported that the Township Board has approved the logo and the Commission could use the logo for various events with the permission of the Supervisor.  Commissioner Terian stated that he discussed legally protecting the logo with Mr. Donald Green, Township Supervisor.  Mr. Green responded that he would review the matter with the legal counsel.

 

The Commissioners discussed at length the purchase of a banner for use at various future functions that the Commission could be involved in.  It was determined that Commissioner Wolfe would pursue obtaining price quotes on a 3’x3’ banner and report back to the Commission.

 

The Commissioners discussed obtaining shirts and other clothing with the logo on them for use at various Parks & Recreation functions.  Commissioner Arrowsmith presented the logo on Compact Disc (CD) to be stored at the Township Office.

 

FUTURE TOWNSHIP PARKS

Commissioner Terian reported that the Land Acquisition Criteria Committee (LACC) would be meeting on Tuesday, September 20, 2005.

 

There was no new information reported about possible park locations at the Garrett Development, southeast corner of South Hill and Maple Roads or the DTE property, Cooley Lake and Duck Lake Roads.

 

ADOPT-A-ROAD (RCOC)

Commissioner Mazzara reported that the Parks & Recreation Commission has received approval from the Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC).  He said he would attend a mandatory training session at which trash bags and vests would be issued.  He felt a spring and fall cleanup would be sufficient.

COMMUNITY PICNIC UPDATE

Commissioner Parks and Commissioner Mazzara reported that the picnic to be sponsored jointly between Township and Village Parks & Recreation Commissions would be Saturday, October 15, 2005 in Central Park.  It would begin at 3:00 p.m., with food, children’s games, prizes, a pumpkin hunt, inflatable bouncers and face painting.  A movie would be shown on an inflatable screen, which was purchased by the Village.  They asked for all Commissioners to volunteer for the event.

 

COMMUNITY CONTACTS/ORGANIZATIONS LIST

Commissioner Terian reported that he has created a list of community contacts, which could be added to.  They discussed using the list for an information/announcement fan out and a volunteer database and felt that emails should come from the Township.  Commissioner Terian agreed to maintain the list.  Chairman Drury said he would discuss use of the list with Supervisor Green.

 

VILLAGE PARKS & RECREATION LIAISON

Commissioner Parks agreed to replace Chairman Drury as the liaison to the Village Parks & Recreation.

 

COMMISSION VACANCY

Chairman Drury announced that Lewis Tripp has resigned as Commissioner, which creates a vacancy.  He asked the Commissioners to direct anyone who might be interested to speak with Supervisor Green.

 

NEW BUSINESS

SECRETARY APPOINTMENT

Chairman Drury announced the Commission needed a new Secretary to replace Mr. Tripp.

 

Commissioner Nasholm moved, Commissioner Arrowsmith seconded to nominate Commissioner Terian as Secretary for the remainder of the year.  Vote unanimously carried.

 

2006 BUDGET

Chairman Drury stated that Supervisor Green has requested the Commission to recommend an amount for use as the Parks & Recreation budget for 2006, based on events they plan to be involved in.  The Commissioners discussed various expenses they might incur.

Commissioner Mazzara moved, Commissioner Arrowsmith seconded to recommend a budget of $6,000.00 for 2006.  Vote unanimously carried.

 

COMMISSIONER’S COMMENTS

Commissioner Parks mentioned a disc golf tournament to be held in Camp Dearborn and asked if the Commission would like to be involved.
