What is a “Principal Residence Exemption”, and why do I have to file
it? A. Every person in Michigan is allowed to claim a Homestead
on their primary residence Which reduces the tax rate by 18 mils per thousand
on their tax bill. In order to enjoy The lower tax rate you must own and occupy
the residence for which you are claiming. Q. What is a "Property
Transfer" Affidavit? A. When Proposal "A" passed in 1994, which
reduced the school property taxes, the new law requires full disclosure. It is
law that the "PTA" is filed, or else stiff penalties will be applied by the State.
Q. I am a Village Resident, why do I pay Township taxes?
A. Villages do not collect taxes for any unit of government except for their
own services. Townships collect school, county, library, police, fire, as well
as the township portion of the taxes. Q. I no longer have a business
in Milford, yet I am still receiving tax bills for the personal property.
A. If you were in business in Milford as of December 31st of the prior year,
you will be responsible for both the summer and winter taxes in the year following.
Tax Day is December 31st and taxes are paid on whatever is on a particular property
in the following tax collection (or year). Q. When are taxes delinquent?
A. Taxes are due and payable July 1st through Sept. 14th in the
summer, and December 1st through February 14th in the winter for any given tax
year. All taxes are turned over delinquent to Oakland County March 1st of any
given tax year. Q. How long do I have to pay my back taxes before
my property goes up for tax sale? A. The laws regarding Tax Sale
have changed drastically in the last year. You must pay all delinquent taxes in
the year following the delinquency or your property will go up for auction the

Q. If I do not receive my tax bill and I miss the due date am I liable
for the interest and penalties? A. Yes, failure to receive the bill
does not eliminate the penalties. As a property owner it is your responsibility
to make sure you receive, and pay your taxes in a timely fashion. If you do no
receive your tax bill by the third week of either July or December you should
call the treasurers office for another copy. Q. Can I make a partial
payment on my taxes? A. Yes, we accept partial payments. Once receipted,
you will receive a new bill showing the balance due. Q. Is there
any relief in taxation for Senior Citizens? A. You may apply for
a summer deferment which will allow you to pay without penalty until February
28th of the current tax year. This form is available at the Treasurers office
and must be re-filed each year. Once you have the deferment you will receive a
new form each year enclosed with your July tax bill. Q. I have run
into hard times and cannot afford to pay my taxes, is there any help available?
A. You may apply for a Hardship through the Assessors office. If you
meet the requirements and limits, you may be granted a hardship for one year.
Information regarding this is available through the Assessors office.
Q. Do you accept post mark for payment of taxes? A. Yes. If relying
on postmark when paying taxes, be sure you allow enough time, or that the envelope
is hand stamped at the post office. Postage machine dates are not acceptable and
will not be honored. The canceled post office date is acceptable by law. All payments
must be received at the Milford Township Treasurers office on or before February
29th. Postmarks will not be honored. Delinquent taxes will be turned over to the
Oakland County Treasurer on March 1st. Q. Where do I get my Dog license?
A. Dog licenses are available at the Milford Township Offices. Dogs
must be licensed in Oakland County each year. The Treasurers office provides this
service as a convenience to our residents. New licenses must be purchased between
December 1st and March 1st each year. A valid rabies certificate must be presented
in order to purchase the license. IMPORTANT CHANGES TO THE MICHIGAN DOG LAW: A
Dog must now be licensed at four months of age, instead of six months of age.
